Turn and talk.
Teach that “Asian American” and “Asian” are umbrella terms to describe Chinese American, Filipino Americans, Indian Americans, Vietnamese Americans, Korean Americans, Japanese Americans (the largest groups) and others. Point out the diversity in the #washthehate and Ad Council ads. If students are familiar with the terms “marginalized” and “empowered”, talk about how this grouping can be both.
